Democrats have largely ceded control of state governments to the GOP, allowing them to rig our political system and undermine democracy itself. Now, we must do the work to repair it.

After the 2016 election, Republicans had their largest majority in the states since 1928, controlling legislative chambers in thirty-two states and governor offices in thirty-three. They also held both chambers of the Congress and the presidency despite losing the popular vote. What happened?

Meaghan Winter: Author and freelance journalist whose work has appeared in Slate, The Guardian, Bloomberg, and more. This is her first book!

Gloria Totten: Founder and President of Public Leadership Institute: a nonprofit, nonpartisan policy and leadership center organized to raise public awareness on key issues of equity and justice for all Americans.

Delegate Gabriel Acevero: Trinidadian American union organizer, political activist and politician representing Maryland's 39th House district. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Shehn Datta: Deputy Campaign Director, National Democratic Redistricting Committee. @shehn
